A Fairytale Twist

This version of The Fairy Godmother, a beloved fairytale character, is based on DreamWorks Animation's Shrek franchise. Introduced as the main antagonist of Shrek 2, the Fairy Godmother is the mother of Price Charming, who Princess Fiona was originally intended to wed prior to meeting Shrek. She plots against newlyweds Shrek and Fiona's relationship, using her magic and potions in an attempt to trick Fiona into falling in love with her son. Fairy Godmother is loosely based on the stock fairy godmother character in fairy tales, specifically "Cinderella" and "Sleeping Beauty", serving as a parody of the common trope.

Design Inspiration

I designed this costume for the Fairy Godmother to be a more formal version of the blue dress she wears in the animated film. When researching gowns for reference, I was drawn to the silhouette and styles of gowns from films of the 1950's, specifically "High Society" starring Grace Kelly, "Love me or Leave me" starring Doris Day, and "White Christmas" starring Vera Ellen. I designed my look to have a full ballgown shape made of many layers of blue tulle in varying shades. The structured bodice would have a center panel with gathered tulle in matching colors, as well as tulle puff sleeves. The main body of the bodice, lower sleeves, and overskirt are designed as a blue brocade material, and the overskirt features custom embroidery representing the character's "bubble" motif from the film. Her look is finished with elaborate fairy wings, half-frame eyeglasses, and a magic wand.
